So I listened to the new @Yelawolf mixtape. Not bad, not bad…but not super dope either. Now don’t get me wrong, it’s not wack…but I kinda expected a little more. Especially since the standards and the bar has been set so high for white rappers. Obviously Eminem holds the throne and bears the first comparison, but when I first heard Yelawolf maybe 2 years ago…I can’t say he was this hard-edged. “Rich Like Me” and “Brick In The Wall” sound nothing like this. And there’s nothing wrong with that, especially since people go thru things, but what I’m getting at is…I think he’s still finding his lane. Still perfecting his craft, a work in progress so to speak. Nothing wrong with that either, I love it, love the grind…and his mixtape falls right in line with that. Out of 15 or so songs, I think I kept four of them, coulda probably kept 7…but maybe I’ll get back to it. The rest of the material wasn’t wack, just not something I’m gonna want to play in the future. Timeless music is what I’m after. “Deer Mama” was more like it. All good tho, he’s grinding, he’s on his way, I can dig it.
*looks dead on this white rapper I met in like 2001- Oakland, California at The Grill Studios. Don’t remember his name but, he was from Alabama too…
